Omnia Mani Mundi – a prayer

Browsing through Alex Pelizzon’s major work “ECOLOGICAL JURISPRUDENCE. The Law of Nature and the Nature of Law.” at my favourite Buddhist temple this morning I was taken aback by the beauty of the Platonic concept of “anima mundi” and created the following prayer:

“Omnia omnibus. Om mani padme hum. Anima Mundi. Om mani padme hum.”

which I partially transcreate as follows:

“May all things be for all people. Om mani padme hum. The breath and spirit of the world. Om mani padme hum.” (To read a word by word explication of “Om mani padme hum” from the Dalai Lama click here.)

Perhaps I will call this prayer of mine “OmMaMun.”

I hope to hear better voices than mine repeat it or variations thereof. I am 69 years old. I hope it happens soon.

Spiritual Communion With Flowers

Om Mani Padme Hum is one of the most profoundly meaningful sentences for communion between sentient and non-sentient beings in the world.

In his book “Kindness, Clarity and Insight” the Dalai Lama explains the meaning of this mantra by writing: “……. the six syllables, om mani padme hum, mean that in dependence on the practice of a path which is an indivisible union of method and wisdom, you can transform your impure body, speech, and mind into the pure exalted body, speech, and mind of a Buddha.”

His Holiness explains the individual words in the mantra like this:

“The first, OM, is composed of three letters, a, u, and m. These symbolise the practitioner’s impure body, speech and mind; they also symbolise the pure exalted body, speech and mind of a Buddha.”

“MANI, meaning jewel, symbolises the factors of method—the altruistic intention to become enlightened, compassion, and love.”

“The two syllables, PADME, meaning lotus, symbolize wisdom, just as a lotus grows forth from mud but is not sullied by the faults of mud, so wisdom is capable of putting you in a situation of non-contradiction whereas there would be contradiction if you did not have wisdom.”

“Purity must be achieved by an indivisible unity of method and wisdom, symbolized by the final syllable HUM, which indicates indivisibility.”
